Q: What is the purpose of Heat Shields underneath the car (1994 Nissan Altima) ?
Since the heat shields started rattling and since they were about to fall off, my mechanic removed them. His explanation was that they are only needed if you are driving on grassy roads to prevent fire. However, a column in wallstreet journal said that not having heat shields may have bad effect on functioning of other parts in the car. The column did not explain which parts. Please Help !!! Should I replace the Heat Shields ?

A: it depends on where they were located if they covered the catalytic converter the mechanic is right.stop here don't read on, if they didn't they are also used as splash protection. if you don't drive much in muddy type water when it rains you should be OK or if you do just wash under the car when you wash the car. or you u can take the wait and see what happens if you don't replace them.

Q: Where is the fuel filter located on a 1994 Nissan Altima GXE?

A: follow the fuel lines and look for it. Are you trying to change the fuel filter? If you can't find it outside, it might be located inside the fuel tank. In that case, you will have to empty the tank out and take the tank down to find it.

Q: I have a 1994 Nissan Altima that recently starting to have a rough idle when in drive?
I was driving home yesturday and when I let go of the gas and the car sits in drive at a red light the RPMs lower a little bit and the engine feels jittery almost like it's misfiring or somthing. When I give it gas I don't feel this anymore. It is less apparent at Park. Before I open the hood I want to see what others say. The best answer get's 10 pts.

A: There could be lots of reasons for a rough and low idle but one of the cheapest to check and fix is leaking vacuum. An engine develops vacuum as it runs and a leak in an engine's vacuum system will definitely cause a rough idle. The engine will otherwise run fine at highway speeds. To check for a vacuum leak, lift the hood and listen for a hissing sound from the leak. Run your fingers along rubber hoses to see if you can find the leak by touch. (If you are not familiar with things under the hood, you probably shouldn't touch anything, however!) Another possibility for a rough idle is a bad oxygen sensor. This will almost always be associated with a dropoff in gas mileage -- where you used to get 28 mpg, now you get 20, or something like that. Again, the engine will seem to run normally at highway speeds. There could be many other possibilities but these are two of the most common.

Q: I have a 1994 Nissan Altima and it keep cutting off when I turn a corner. What could be wrong with it?
my car hasatate when I press on the gas but it will pick up speed than cut off. The steering will tremble. The worst thing it does is keep cutting off when I go fast.

A: Sounds like you should have it diagnosed by a reputable repair facility. Most shops can do the diagnosis for under 100.00, which will identify what is causing this good luck.

Q: A 1994 Nissan Altima Headlight Problem?
I have a 1994 Nissan Altima, and I went to remove the passanger side headlight bulb, from the lense. There is a little clip/spring that holds the bulb in place inside the lense to keep it from being angled in the lense. Now that its not there, my headlight is pointing to the sky. I know the little clip/spring that holds it in place is part of the lense assembly, so the proper fix would be to replace the entire assembly, however I don't have the money since I'm out of work to replace the assembly even with a used one. Does anyone know a fix to this that I can do to it, to keep my headlight straight in the lense, instead of being angled, without replacing the lense, that is cost free?

A: Go to an auto wrecker and just get the part you need. One of those you pull it places. Otherwise drive during the day.

Q: I need to find the trunk drain hole in my 1994 Nissan Altima?
I have a rust issue in the spare tire well in the trunk. Car wash guy told me I can wash it out and scrape rust to open up a drain hole that normally allows the water to escape. Is this true? Where is the hole, I can't find it? Thanks I found it! Dodge: 1) do you know how to fix the leak problem? (if the cause is tail light leak or other) is it expensive? 2) there is a small plug that I got opened and then there seems to be another one about twice the size but I can't pry it open. Is that another plug or something else? Thanks so much!

A: In general, drain plugs in trunks are often either metal plates covered up with a glob of sealant, or they are obvious big rubber or plastic plugs. It will be near or on the bottom, but not where the sidewall of the tire will sit. You may want to look up at the bottom of the car to see where it is. Either way, you either pry the plug out, or give up and punch your own hole(s) and plug it up later after it dries out.

Q: How do I add freon to my 1994 Nissan Altima GXE?
My air conditioning just stopped working today, so I believe it might have run out of freon. Is it possible for me to add freon (I have no experience)

A: Nope. Leave this one to the pros for several good reasons. First, you'd need the specialized equipment including gauges and a vacuum pump to evacuate the system. Also you'd need to be properly trained/certified in order to have legal access to R-22 refrigerant since its closely regulated by the government. Pressurized freon can actually kill you if mishandled, and being flash-frozen isn't a nice way to go. Freon must, by law, be reclaimed; its release into the atmosphere is quite eco-UNfriendly as it destroys the Earth's ozone layer. Oh, too, your car's A/C isn't designed to consume freon-if its truly 'run out', then you have a leak in what is supposed to be a closed system. Finding and fixing the leak before adding more expensive freon is imperative-another reason to hire a qualified mechanic. A thourough systems check will determine the problem instead of your just guessing at it and potentially wasting several pounds of R-22 trying to recharge a system with, say, dried-out, leaky compressor seals. Enough said?

Q: Does a 1994 Nissan Altima come with a keyless entry?
Just want to kno if it does becouse I bought a used car but I just have a valet key, not the orignal. The car has a alarm and power windows. p.s. if it does is it way for me to get a actual new keyless remote and nissan key for my car?

A: All cars have keyless entry. It's called a brick through the window. Go the dealership - they will have to "program" a new key and / or remote for you. They should be able to do it same day but it may be a little pricey. If you want to opt out - go ahead and purchase a new security alarm. They come with keyless entry, remote start, paging, even camera's now. Here is an Amazon link of a SCYTEK (one of the best out there) to give you an idea.

Q: What is the purpose of an idler arm pulley on a 1994 Nissan Altima?
Mine fell off the other day. I noticed the car has been running a little hotter than normal. other than that....nothing... at least not yet. Ideas or suggestions AND help?

A: AC idler can fall off and just no A/C but if you loose the water pump idler pulley the belt will rub on the engine front cover. Do not continue to drive with missing parts or bad belts. Unless you want to replace the engine because it got to hot. Overheating will kill an old motor fast and the boiling coolant could break the top tank of the radatior.

Q: i need a transmission for my 1994 nissan altima.. what one is compatible?
i just to need to know the years that would work on a 1994 altima.. also are there any other car models that use the same transmission.. any help is appreciated

A: Auto or Manual? That would help us... I'm guessing it is a automatic? If yes, your car's transmission is made by Jatco and the model is RE4F04A. It looks like Nissan used this transmission in all 1993 to 2001 Altima automatics. The Nissan Quest from 1993 to 2001 uses the same transmission but that car has the V6 so I wouldn't think that they would go together in your car without some modifications. The Nissan Maxima from 1992 to 1998 uses the same transmission but again you could run into issues. I would just go to a salvage yard or look on the classifieds for a car with a good transmission that will work in your car.

Q: My 1994 Nissan Altima has been sitting dormant for 2 years. What should I do before starting it?
The battery has died and is corroded. I'm not sure what steps I should take before I restart this car.

A: If you didn't put fuel stabilizer in it, your gas is now sort of like varnish. It probably won't fire. Get a siphon and remove as much as you can, then put in at least 5 gallons. Then hit the key and wait 5 seconds for fuel pump to pressurize the system. You know you need a new battery.

Q: My 1994 Nissan Altima GXE's "check brake" light is always on, what could be the cause of the problem?
My 1994 Nissan Altima GXE's "check brake" light is always on, what could be the cause of the problem? The dealer could not find anything wrong.

A: there is a sensor to see if the break fluid is low, and this may be broken. the light comes on when the parking break is set, the little switch that tells if the break is set may be broken or miss adjusted, if the dealer could not find the problem, then they are incompetent, find a better dealer.

Q: How to replace the side view mirror on a 1994 Nissan Altima?
I recently broke the driver side mirror on my altima and would like to replace it myself. What I need to know is how to get to the screw housing in the door. If anyone knows how or knows where I could find the information online I would be thankful.

A: you will probably have to take the inside door panel off or loose to be able to get at the 3 10millimeter nuts that hold the mirror on, take the nuts off and if the mirror is electric, unplug the connector to it and pull the mirror out and reinstall the new one.
