Q: 1997 nissan altima, starter stay stuck, drove it heard noise now wont start what could it be?
A: Replace the starter.
Q: I am selling my 1997 Nissan Altima. My mechanic estimated the repairs it needs. How do I set the sale price??
The estimated repairs including labor total $1,530.00. He said the distributor was leaking, need new sway bars, pinions are leaking, and I need new rear breaks. Do you just subtract the total repair estimate from the value of the car? The car itself runs good. I was shocked when he told me the amount of the repairs. This car runs really good.
A: If you've got your story straight, I think you may need a new mechanic. First, sway bars can't really wear out as they are a solid piece of metal. However, they may need their bushings replaced. As for the other items, if it is a safety issue, I would personally replace the rear brake pads as you don't need anyone getting hurt.
Relative to pricing, if you check on KBB.com or NADA.com they will help you determine a price. Read the definitions of excellent, good, fair and poor and determine which category your Altima falls into. Then you can enter your info and make a good pricing decision. Also, check Autotrader.com to see actual listings in your area and figure these listing have $500 of negotiating room in them.
Finally, take the time to fully detail (in & out) your Altima. This may take a day to accomplish, but will repay you with an extra $200-$400 if the car really looks fresh and well cared for.
Good luck!!
Q: 1997 Nissan Altima won't crank in park. I bridged the starter as suggested and still won't start, what next?
This used to be intermittant and shifting to neutral and back would help. After a front end fender bender, I can't get it to start at all.
A: Did your fender bender cause any damage to any fuse boxes or wiring? I had a wire that was cut to the relay of the egi (electronic gasoline injection) causing it not to start.
Are you sure your battery is fully charged.
Q: How much it would cost for 1997 Nissan altima to replace the started and all the shock in 4 sides.?
how much it would cost to buy the starter and shocks for all 4 sides and how much it would cost for the repair. Please let me know if anybody is aware of it. I would appreciate, if anybody can tell where to go like monroe or any info regarding is appreciated.
A: Starter and shocks for parts would be about $450. Install for all would run about the same. You can do the starter yourself if you have any mechanical know-how. You'll need a spring compressor to do the shocks. They rent those at Autozone and Advance. You'll still need to get the wheels aligned after you're done.
Q: I have a 1997 Nissan Altima. It will not start but the battery and alternator is good. what is the problem?
there is no power at all. the lights, radio, power locks, anything electrical. but the battery and the alternator is fine.
ok, i had the battery AND the alternator tested at an auto zone. i am not getting any power to anything electrical in my car. what is wrong ?someone help!!!
A: Under the hood there is main relay fuse box. A main fuse is mounted inside this box, I don't remember the amp but it is probably 75 amps, they are notorious for burning out when the electrical system is compromised ( jump starting wrong or bad alternator). Also, these cars were notorious for bad ignition switches. Just because you took it to "Auto Zone" and they said it was fine, does not mean it is.
Q: I have a 1997 Nissan Altima that keeps on idling low and then turns off. It does it after driving for a while?
The lights dim when I lower the windows, and if I have the stereo on it makes the car idle lower. So with the car lights on the the stereo on the car shakes and idle very low. I have already changed the Battery and my mechanic has check the alternator for the boltage and it showed low. He did not take it off he check it with while on the car still.
A: Change the alternator and the problem is fixed also I would also change belts on the car .
Q: How do you turn off the brake light on a 1997 Nissan Altima?
My brake light stays on when I turn on my car... no the emergency brake is not on. The light just wont turn off. I don't know why. Anyone know why and how I can get it to turn off?
It is the break light on my dashboard. I basically wanted to know what could cause this to happen so that when I take it into the shop I won't get taken advantage of by the mechanic.
A: Yeah, what they said, or it could be a fuse.
Q: how much will it cost to change engine bearings in a 1997 nissan altima?
My mechanic says that my engine's car bearings are worn out, and he would need to replace them. can he really replace the bearings by themselves? how much would something like that cost?
A: What is the car doing?
Is it knocking...not ticking (all altimas have noisy timing chains, they sound like a light metallic slap or tick every few seconds) but a constant loud "knock, knock, knock" that increases with rpm?
Does it smoke bad out the tailpipe?
If not there is no reason for a rebuild.
If he is pulling the engine it would be silly not to get the entire engine rebuilt. If the bearing are worn out then it is advisable to also resurface the crankshaft. This is what the bearings sit against To do this the entire engine has to be taken apart.
If you do need one it will be cheaper to get a used engine from a junk yard. Most yards give warrantys. Get at least a 6 month warranty. You can pick up a nice used, lower mileage then you have now, for under $400 if you shop around. You can have it installed for $800 at most.
Rebuilding your engine will cost about $1500 plus the cost of install, about $800. Save yourself more then $1000 and find an used engine.
or...if the car is running ok and it is still passing whatever local emissions laws you have...just keep driving it!
Q: who knows what the noise on the right rear of a 1997 nissan altima is?
bought a 97 nissan altima gxe. started hearing noise coming from the right rear like something is moving around in it. Looked back there but could not find anything that looked liked it was loose. has anyone else had this problem and know what it is?
A: An easy test is to jack up that wheel with the car parked, engine off, but the parking brake not set. Make sure to chock the front wheels so that the car won't roll off the jack, since you won't have the parking brake on. Then, with the wheel just off the ground, turn it round and round to see if you hear any loose parts rattling around. If so, with drum brakes in the rear, the shop will remove the brake drum and fix the broken part. Other possibilities are the exhaust pipe hitting the frame, suspension noises, or maybe even something in the trunk depending on whether it only happens when you go over a bump etc. Tires can make a loud constant whirling road noise at higher speeds.
Q: How to locate and replace 1997 Nissan Altima computer?
Mechanic are not able to troubleshoot the problem i I am having with my Altima. Service center asked me to replace the computer they are asking too much money. How can I replace the computer myself. Thanks
If the car is parked overnight and start the car it does not start right away I have to push the key for long time to to start and than warn up for at leats minutes if I put the car in drive right away the car shuts down. Whe I am driving the car and when the automatic transmisition shifts the gear the car slow downs and or start loosing the power. I let the gas pedal go and repress the gas pedal to regain engine power. Car some some times jerks like its not getting gas. I went to several shops and mechanic It was on the dealers shop they are saying I have to change the computer because they are unable to read the dignosting from it. they think its shot.
I am adding additional information for John Paul if he reads you read this again.
A: i own a repair shop, and i think its located under the passengers seat, and you,ll have to find a good used one ,or purchase a new one ,and swap out the chip in it,but it has to be the same exact number as your old one is,or it wont work right,i have did this a lot but, a good used one is sort of hard to find sometimes for these cars ,because these cars don't get junked that much,,good luck,i hope this help,s..and happy thanksgiving.
Q: Any ideas on the part/labor cost to replace the muffler on a 1997 Nissan Altima?
The muffler on the Altima I drive rusted through on Monday. My wife tells me that sometime between 1997 and 2001, she previously had the muffler replaced, but has no idea on how much it cost. Times are tough and disposable income low, so I'd like to have an idea about how much I'm going to need to scrape together. I live in the Milwaukee/Racine, WI area as I assume location will play a part in the cost.
A: average exhasust shop 200-250. dealer probably about 350
Q: How do I remove the front door panels of a 1997 nissan altima?
I'm trying to install new speakers in a 97 altima, but can't figure out how to remove the door panel to reach it. I've taken out 3 screws on the bottom of the door, but what do I do next?
A: Autozone, which owns or is affiliated with Alldata, has online repair info.

Q: Where can I find some good front tires, not back tires for a 1997 Nissan Altima GXE?
I am looking for some good front wheel tires. All Season. I have went to Tire Rack.com and it just shows me tires for the 1997 Nissan Altima. Not 1997 Nissan Altima GXE.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?loadRank=2&width=205%2F&ratio=60&diameter=15&autoYear=1997&diameter=15&sortCode=38550&minLoad=S&ratio=60&autoMake=Nissan&autoModClar=&minSpeedRating=S&width=205%2F&autoModel=Altima&vehicleSearch=true&startIndex=0&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&speed_rating=S&speed_rating=T&speed_rating=U&speed_rating=H&speed_rating=V&speed_rating=Z&speed_rating=W&speed_rating=Y&RunFlat=All&x=90&y=14
I still don't know what to get. Are there any other websites?
A: GXE doesnt mean anything. An Altima is an Altima. And the front tires and rear tires are the same. Go to Goodyear or Firestone and get you some tires. By the time you buy them online, then pay shipping, then pay mount and balance, you will have paid more than going to a tire store and buying them. If you buy them from a store, most places offer free rotation so you will keep coming back to them and they can sell you brakes later. Or tie rod ends. Or more tires. Get roadhazard coverage too. Then they will replace them if you run over your engine parts as your GXE emblem falls off and gets sucked through your radiator and blows your head.
Q: does 1997 nissan altima have automatic fuel shut off if in accident?
I was hit in the back right corner panel of my 1997 nissan altima. My car will not start now. It will turn over but acts as if it is not getting fuel. I checked the fuel pumped and it does not looked damaged and also checked to see if exhaust was damaged or kinked and was not. Any ideas?
A: NO, there is not, possible fuel pump issue which is in the tank. check if you have fuel pressure first, or if you have a scanner check for trouble codes, could be many things BUT definately NOT a fuel cut switch, check spark at the plugs poss distributor issue too
Q: Why does my 1997 nissan altima make a squealing noise?
I own a 1997 nissan altima with over 100k miles. A loud squealing noise comes from the front wheels. It is especially loud at slow speeds and barely noticable at higher speeds. I don't think it's the rotors because it makes the noise when I'm not applying the breaks at all.
The car is parked for extended periods of time (two to four months) while I am away at school.
What could be causing this noise?
A: Front Wheel bearings or the Constant velocity joints on the front drive shafts. Those are the most likely, but without actually seeing it or hearing the noise for myself its very hard to diagnose. If it is the wheel bearing you should get them checked out as soon as, you don't want to be overtaken by your wheel on the motor way!
