It is automatic And it sounded like something popped and thats when i broked down. How much will it cost to repair it?

A: If you were just idleing you may be lucky ,, it sounds like a timing belt, Just hope it didnt bend your valves depending on what engine you have it will cost about $800 to $1500... Good luck

Q: 1998 Nissan Altima Alarm System Help Needed?
The car alarm will go off on its own & stop randomly. I have no remote for the alarm to shutoff. I want to disable the system, how would I go about doing so? I have searched for help on google but only found a couple of sites that were no help. Anyone have some knowledge that could help me? Thanks a bunch.

A: Check the front hood switch to make sure it's adjusted high enough to make contact with the hood. It will be a push button switch along the fenders or the front of the hood. If it's too low it can set off an alarm just from the different temperatures of the hood due to motor heat. Poorly adjusted side door latches or faulty door pillar switches will also trigger an alarm.

Q: I have a 1998 nissan altima battery dies everytime?
Every time I jump start my battery the car works perfectly. When I turn the car off, it will not start. Then when I jump start it, car turns on and works well. I put in a brand new battery and still the same problem. Is it an alternator or voltage regulator or just loose wiring? Help...... Thanks.

A: Take the car to Advance Auto. They will check the alternator and the battery for free. If both of them check out ok, check the battery conections and then the starter connections. Another thing to look at is when you pull the lights on, do they dim badly when you attempt to start it? If they do you have a bad connection somewhere. If they don't dim, then I would say it's a bad starter connection.

Q: 1998 Nissan Altima front speakers don't work?
back speakers work - no fuses are blown - is there an in-line fuse or is it wiring or is it the radio itself?

A: No in line-fuses. If they both went out at the same time and it's not the Bose system, the problem is most likely in the radio. The audio amp IC that drives the front speakers may be bad. If you have the Bose system and they went out at different times, I'd suspect the Bose amps.

Q: What is the average cost to replace the engine on a 1998 Nissan Altima? ?
We took it to the dealership and quote was $1600 for the engine (75k) + $1200 labor + $500 parts = $3300. Is this fair, should we shop around, or consider trading in? The Altima with bad engine has 103,000 miles.

A: dont do it. thats bull...way over priced....1200 for labor alone!! wowowowo you could buy a brand new motor for 1100 online...and go to a regular mechanic for about 500 to put it in...so for 1400 less youll have a brand new motor and it put in...thats insane that they would do that to you

Q: How much would it cost to reattach the side view mirror of a 1998 nissan altima. ?
I was side swiped and the mirror is now dangling. The wires are still functional, but mirror is detached. I was just wondering how much that would cost to fix. Thanks.

A: If you want to fix it yourself, about $30 - $100 for a used mirror. here is how: http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c15280078d4b

Q: What do I need to do to fix problems from codes P0440 and P1448 on a 1998 Nissan Altima?
The "Check Engine" light came on. Took the car to AutoZone and they retrieved codes P0440 & P1448. What caused this? What needs to be done/replaced? Can I do it myself? The car is 10 years old and I hate dumping lots of money into it. How do I turn off the "Check Engine" light? My car is due for inspection this month and it will not pass if the light is on. Detailed instructions (if available) are appreciated Thanks

A: P0440....Evaporative Emission Control System (make sure gas cap is on properly) P1448 ELC system 2 fault (Manufacturer specific code for Nissan, "P1448. Vent Control Valve.") http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=nissan+p1448+code&ei=UTF-8&fr=moz2 http://www.samarins.com/diagnose/checkengine.html http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/myth-conception.shtml

Q: How do I install a Sony xplode into a 1998 Nissan Altima?
I have an older model. I know it works. I want to take the stock receiver out and install this.

A: All you need is the correct wiring harness, which you should be able to purchase where you bought the receiver. Then it's just a question of getting the old one out. Visit a Nissan dealership and ask them if you can borrow their tool for popping out the stock radio.

Q: What does I/D off light mean in Nissan Altima 1998?
I have nissan altima 1998 and for the last 3 days in my odometer it shows "I/D off". Does anyone know what does that mean?

A: It may be O/D off which stands for "Overdrive Off". That light comes on when the overdrive is pushed to the OFF position. You can get more information about it at: http://www.courtesyparts.com/nissan-manual/pdf/1998-Nissan-Altima.pdf Look at Pages 48 and 50. You can make it go off by putting overdrive back in the ON position...

Q: What is average cost to repair or replace the engine on a 1998 Nissan Altima?
Repair shop says there is low compression (25 psi) on the engine and they can replace it for $3200. Please advise! Has about 100,000 miles on it. Thanks for responding. One more thing - when I turn key in ignition engine seems like it's going to start but just can't turn over.

A: $3200 is very steep. My shops will do that replacement for $1400 with a lower mileage used engine. That includes parts, labor, new timing belt, water pump, tensioner, cam & crank seals, spark plugs. But first... Unless you know for sure something happened to cause this kind of compression loss, get a 2nd opinion. Times are tough for shops right now. Some of them are getting very creative to win big invoices. If you're in Southern California, email me. Maybe I can help.

Q: 1998 Nissan Altima fix it or new car?
I have a 1998 nissan altima with 180,000 miles and is alway have problems. Should get a used 05 Altima or wait and get 07 altima.

A: I have a 97 altima and it has 375,000. Just passed california smog so i would say fix it. You have at least 200,000 left to drive it!!

Q: What types of problem(s) cause the "Check Engine Light" to light on a 1998 Nissan Altima?
I know a bad Oxygen sensor can cause this, but is there anything else? I've already had 2 different Oxygen sensors replaced on the car. How many sensors are on the 98 Altima? Thanks!

A: A good oxygen sensor more often causes a yellow check engine light than a bad oxygen sensor! The O2 error code could be simply telling you your engine is running too rich or lean as it's supposed to do. The technician has to follow a test procedure based on the error codes to diagnose the true problem which apparently was never fixed on your car. http://www.samarins.com/diagnose/checkengine.html http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/myth-conception.shtml

Q: 1998 Nissan Altima- Do I have a transmission problem?
My car drives fine but every once in a while i will be pressing on the gas and my car will not move. The car will stay still for a second or two and then go. Does anyone know if I have a transmission problem or maybe its the timing belt?? And do you think it is worth it to try and fix or just get a new car? 1998 Nissan Altima 88,000 miles Thanks

A: If the fluid level id in the marks (checked running in park), then either the front pump is going bad, or the valve body has some sticking valves. Does it "kick in" hard if you press on the accelerator pedal slightly? Might be a clogged transmission filter too, sludge builds up over time.

Q: How can I turn of my check engine light on my 1998 Nissan altima?
How can i turn of my check engine light on my 1998 Nissan altima? the car is in good conditions

A: as long as you corrected the problem, this is the home mechanics way of clearing most nissan trouble codes. i had a 98 altima and did this many times. one the floor on the driverside by the pedals, kinda behind the radio. you will see a black trim piece covering the ecu. take that panel down. you will see a what looks like a flat head screw in the ecu. turn it clockwise till it stops, wait 2 seconds, then turn back counterclockwise. start the car. the light will be off, as long as all problems were corrected.

Q: What are some common engine swaps for a 1998 Nissan Altima?
I have a 1998 Nissan Altima and I was wondering if anyone knew of any engines that would work fairly well in my car, that are also common swaps.

A: I dont know of people doing them on sucha car but if you had a good mechanic with fabrication skills you could prob swap a VQ35DE from the 350z, the 4.6l from the titan, or the V6 from the newer altimas.
