By the time Pathfinder arrived in 1987, it was faced with a group of rivals that included the Jeep Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, Chevy S-10 Blazer, and Ford Bronco II. Original Pathfinders, available in base XE and uplevel SE trim levels, came with a 153-horsepower 3.0-liter V6. A 5-speed manual gearbox was standard across the board, with a 4-speed automatic optional. Initially available in just a 2-door body style, a 4-door body was added for 1990, with both 2WD and part-time 4WD.

Q: My 1993 Nissan Pathfinder is running rough and black smoke from unburned fuel.?
The computer gives a code for MAF sensor, but I have replaced it. I unplugged it while it was running and it ran worse. I know its getting to rich a fuel mixture but I dont know why. I replaced the temp sensors, fuel pressure regulator, checked all vacuum (which the vac line to the egr had no vac, but i routed some to it and it ran worse), replace maf and tps. Is it possible that it is the computer? I do have an exhaust leak between head and manifold. I mechanic said that the o2 sensor would not cause it, and that an exhaust leak wouldnt cause it to run rich. WHAT DO YOU THINK? I replaced plugs, cap, and rotor. With the truck running, I unplug the MAF and it idles up for 1 second and then way down and very rough. So, I figured both of the MAF sensors I tried that with were good. It is definately rich fuel smoke. Not oil. 132k miles.

A: Probably bad plugwires, or fouled plugs. If that isn't the problem, then you may have a burned valve or valves. Check the plugs and wires first. If they are OK then do a compression test on each cylinder to check the integrity of the valves. There is also the possibility of a broken oil ring or cylinder wall damage, which will cause the engine to smoke from oil blowby, which will foul the plug and cause the affected cylinder to missfire.

A: yes ,it is your water pump, it will slowlyleak, from the bottom and and if you let go on , it will leak at a faster rate, cause over heating and then youll have more problems from not doing the maintenance ,getrdone soon!

I have a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder. I bought it in 2001 with 39,000 miles and in pristine condition, other than underbody weathering. I drove it over 3 years problem free. Then toward the end of 2004 the problem started. After engine warm up and a few minutes of driving, I take off from a stop and it sticks in first gear. After trudging along at 25 mph, it unpredictably kicks in and properly shifts for a while. Then the problem repeats - unpredictably. Three dealerships and a crack mechanic examined and researched the issue. After a rebuilt transmission with all new solenoids, a new $925 computer processor, cleaned and checked electrical connectors, and many test drives, it was test driven problem free for short distances until the third week. Hotter weather and a 25 minute drive brought the problem back. My mechanic suspects that a false signal from the computer to the trans solenoid is preventing proper shifting. Why? We obviously don't know! It seems like a "can of worms" has been opened with no simple and economic answers readily available - UNLESS YOU CAN HELP!

A: unfortunetaly my friend, you brought a WD21 Pathfinder, which its a miracle the tranny has lasted this long. Very common problem with these Pathfinders between 1990-1995, the tranny's for both AT and MT where horrible. Two things you can do, replace with new or reman tranny from Nissan or trade it in for a newer editions R50 Pathfinder VG33E 1996-2000, VQ35DE 2001-2004 or R51 Pathfinder VQ40DE 2005 till present.

Q: How do you remove the factory installed radio from a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder? There are no screws.?


A: It's been a while since I worked on one of these, but I believe the screws are located 1) under the ashtray and 2) behind the climate control plate (should have 2 plastic tabs that hold it in place). Once all screws are removed, the face of the dash should come off into your hands (be careful not to pull to quickly or forecefully as you may need to remove the wires from the cigarette lighter, ashtray light, etc.)

It has a new starter new battery and spark plugs are working fine the thing is it works then when i come back to use it again it wont start .The engine might be getting flooded but i dont know why it would be. i would rather fix this myself if i could.

A: Last time I needed a new starter and battery I installed them and it wouldn't start. Couldn't figure it out until finally i realized that the darn thing was out of gas. Check that before you buy any new parts!

I have a pathfinder with 31" mud tires but they are really close to the wheel wells. So I would like to get a bod lift. But the problem is pathfinders are really tippy so I don't want it to be so tippy I can't turn a corner sharply. So the question is what would be the best bet for a lift but also increase stability of the car (axles maybe?) please be as specific as possible and I'll make your answer best answer.

A: you could use hockey pucks and drill out the centers, 3'' should do it for you. Also try putting wheel spacer on you axles to widen the wheel base if you don't mind the tire sticking out the side. Just google search nissan lift kits if you want a name brand.

I have a 1993 Nissan pathfinder and the dashboard lights went out, I was driving and they just went out suddenly. Is there a fuse somewhere for the dashboard lights? I looked in the fuse panel in the cab but I didn't see one for it. Is there another panel somewhere, where would it be? Please help!! I also already checked all the fuses in the fuse panel under the steering wheel and didn't see any fuse blown.

A: Double check the fuses and Try to check the CLEARANCE/ILLUMI Fuse. im not sure if thats directly related to the dashboard lights but its worth a shot.
