Q: should my gas cap hiss at fill up?
I am driving 2006 hyundai sonata GLS. I was just wondering if my gas cap should hiss when I open to cap for a fill up. I used to drive 1998 nissan pathfinder before I bought this car and gas cap on that car used to hiss when I opened it like it was releasing pressure. Should my sonata's gas cap hiss too?

A: All of the systems are sealed and closed for emissions reasons. As a result when the gas warms through the day, you may get that hissing.

the fuel consumption of this secondhand Pathfinder (1998, petrol, auto) is of more than that of my Nissan Terrano (1986,petrol, manual, carburetor) that I was using before. my local mechanic has changed the engine oil, fuel filter, oil filter, plugs, but there is no improvement in the fuel consumption. Can anyone advise me on other areas that my local mechanic can crosscheck and rectify to reduce the fuel consumption?

My problem is my muffler is all rusted and needs to be replaced again. Its only 3 years old. Could this be the muffler or something with the Pathfinder that makes it rust faster.

A: Hi! This is common with all oem applications as most exhaust systems are made out of Aluminized steel instead of stainless. These systems rust out prematurley specially if you live in a region where it is humid or there is a lot of salt in the air or in the ground (where it snows or near a beach). Your best bet is to replace it with an aftermarket stainless exhaust as they will not rust. (and probably cost the same as replacing them with a factory oem piece). A: There are much better Pathfinders out now 2005 and up 4.0 liter 265 hp motor that gets better gas milage than the VG-33 motor that only has 165 hp. More modern crash protection full frame trucklet. No timing belt to fail too. Buying a 11 year old car or truck you'll soon find out just why they are selling it. Or it can be a perfictly maintained truck and just being a different driver the truck might not like being driven different and transmission fails?

A: Either engine 3.3 liter or 3.5 liter Pathfinder is not a gas mileage champ. 17 to 21 Highway miles a gallon is about all you can expect. Non aerodynamic shape 11 year old technology. However the Rogue by Nissan is available in all wheel drive and can make over 27 miles a gallon. Cross over SUV's are popular these days. Even Mercedes Benz came out with a newer smaller CUV.

I can not open locks with remote. Remote battery is new.

A: may have to get you or key fob checked or reprogram your pcm for the alarm. Could be as simple as a fuse or as major as who ever boosted your car didn't follow procedures right and gave your system an improper voltage spike that the system couldn't handle and blew out your pcm

A: Make sure your not in four wheel drive. This uses a lot of fuel. Try that first then check back.

Q: Nissan supplied Bose system, need model number - 1998 Pathfinder SE?
Does anyone know the model number for the head unit of the factory installed Bose system in my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder? The same unit was also in Maxima's of the same time (1996-2000?). It sounds great but all the buttons are falling off. I am getting the run around from Nissan, Bose, Clarion (who makes the actual head unit) and Herman Electronics (who supply the parts for Clarion).

A: The number is on the sticker on the top of the unit. Just remove the trim around the radio and you should be able to see it.

A: Let me see no engine light stalling and restart after the electronics cool down... can be caused by a bad distributor or coil inside also the electronic ignition parts photo-optic light emiting diode and pick up inside the distributor.

I am looking for a Starter Solenoid for my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, my truck doesn't turn over after it rains but the next day, it turns over like nothing happened. I have checked the battery, starter, and altenator.

A: These days nobody replaces just the solenoid--we replace the whole starter unit--motor and solenoid at once. You probably do have a bad solenoid, but finding a new one will be next to impossible. Starters can take a long time to quit completely, but if I was you I'd replace it before it leaves you stranded.
