Q: timing belt?
I have a Nissan Quest 1996 while driving it suddenly stops, I've been told the timing belt is broken and a mechanic told me the best thing to do is to buy another another engine cause once the belt is broken it messes up the valves and everything thing. I'm currently looking for a second opinion, any suggestions.

A: Yes, it's an "interference" engine.

Q: Are the Yokohama Avid Touring tires good?
I'm looking for 2 things primarily: Thread life and Low noise. I have a 1996 Nissan quest. Info can be found on tirerack.com. Also, When should you get tires balanced? and finally, are there any tires under $39/e? the $39/each were for some other brand ones... oh, 15" steel wheels

A: yokohamam tires are a good tire if rotated and everyhing you should be able to get 2 to 3 years out of them unless ou do alot of driving but they say 60 t 70 000 miles i may be off on that one but someplace around their and for thew balance when hey are put on the rims and if you run them all year it would not hurt to have them check toward wimiter or is it starts vibrating and if you can get them for that its a steal cause that sounds like its for a 13 inch tire

Q: Two mechanics have made offers on my car. How do I get the highest price?
It's a 1996 Nissan Quest with 182K miles and a blown head gasket (muddy brown oil, and white smoke coming out the tail pipe). First first guy offerd $900, second ofered$1000. I haven't accepted either offer yet. should I write the first guy back and say I've had an offer for $1000, do you want to beat it? Or should I not disclose the upped price? What's the way to get the most out of this deal? I don't want to be dishonest even if the first mechanic seemed a bit dishonest to me.

A: No, you have to disclose the price. Tell the first guy you got an offer of $1000, and ask him if he can beat it? If he says no, then take the other offer, case closed. If he beats it, then write the second guy, and tell him the exact same thing: "I got an offer of $1100. Can you beat it?" The only reason you shouldn't be happy is if the car is worth more than that. You can easily find the car's value by going to kbb.com and subtracting the repair cost from the value.

Q: What causes inner tire wear?
I recently had an alignment (again). I had a CV boot/axle changed so...had to do the alignment. The wear is on the inner part of the tire...i'm not sure what has caused it since I've been rotating and keeping the car aligned. 1996 nissan quest. thanks.

A: Overinflated tires is another possibility.

Q: What wears or tears your vehicles CV boot / axle?
Just wondering if hard driving (fast turns on streets or on-ramps) could tear your cv boot. I recently had the second one tear but I'm thinking it was just time for it to break 1996 nissan quest.

A: No, hard driving won't hurt the boots. They typically tear from age or damage from a road hazard. The outer boots are normally the first to go, as they not only flex up and down, (Like the inners), but have to steer left and right. Its just a normal item to check, no big deal.

Q: My car eats too much fuel?
My van is 1996 Nissan Quest GXE, It eats too much gas, not cause it is a v6, but cause it has a problem. It is kind of heavy when acelerating, it takes many turns to start. In little driving distance, the fuel is gone. Please help me fix it.

A: Clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter, clogged catalytic converter, improper timing, underinflated tires, wheels badly misaligned.... any one of these things can kill your mpgs. You ought to see a mechanic who can take a close look at it.

Q: My car makes a clunk sound when I turn left, what is it?
I drive a NIssan Quest, 1996. The clunk is under my feet, I can feel it. Could it be the alignment?

A: Your clunking sound is a CV joint. When the begin to fail the start making rattling/clicking sounds when you turn the vehicle. A clunking sound means the CV joint is broken and should be towed to the shop for repairs. Driving it with a broken CV joint can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and possibly have an accident. Brand new CV joints for your vehicle retail for about $375.00 each (1 right, 1 left). You can buy them for far less but these will be remanufactured units which will not last nearly as long. I don't know how many miles you have on your vehicle but if you buy new you can expect about the same number of miles. If you buy remanufactured plane on having them replaced every 30,000 - 40,000 miles. The primary difference between new and remanufactured are the balls inside each joint. The balls in a remanufactured joint are resurfaced to make them smooth again and then rechromed to bring them back to size. ...but the balls in a new joint are made from virgin metal without rechroming. The early failure of the remanufactured joint is from the chrome flaking off as the mileage increases. Your shop will refer to it as a half shaft assembly or an axle assembly which is exactly what it is. An inner and outer CV joint with a shaft connecting them. Q: Will a trailer hitch from a 1996 Ford Windstar minivan fit a 2006 Nissan Quest minivan?

A: more than likey not, since trailer hitches attach to specific parts of the frame and each hitch is vehicle specific, also be aware that its not a good idea to have anyone weld it to the frame, cause if anything should happen you'd be looking at one hell of a law suit

I have 1996 Nissan Quest. My car turned off while I was driving. After 10 min. of trying, it started again but when I press on the gas pedal, it was barely moving and it was dieing and turned off again. After about 2 hours I started the engine normaly and it was moving normal like nothing happened, but I am affraid to drive it. What do you think is wrong with it.

I am in the process of replacing strut mount on Nissan Quest XE (1996) Anyone please let me know what is the Strut Mount Torx spec? Can't find it anywhere on the web. Thanks guys.

A: Three outside 14mm nuts 35 ft pounds center 17mm strut nut peplace with new nylon locking nut each time or loctite torque to 75 # ft. Strut bolts 19mm nuts and 17mm bolts to steering knuckle 100 ft pounds. I would replace the turning bearing disks at this time and new shocks too. Q: how to open 1996 nissan quest with a slim jim?
locked myself out of my car. i got me a slim jim but cant manage to move the control arm to open the door. does anyone know around what area of the door it is located HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!!

A: Beginner! just call out a locksmith because the door locks have wires running to the unlock actulators and the hoor handle key cyls have wires running to them you could easily hook a wire and pull up cutting it now the security system won't turn off. Honking horn and lights flashing you are inside the van but the key lock won't reset the security system so you can start the Quest. I pry back on the top of the passengers side door at the top slide a door stopper wedge or your wallet in to hold. And use a four foot 1/4 metal rod with a 90 degree bend on the end. Insert the rod at the top rear corner stand on something to look down thru the windshield as you hook the lock at the handle or push the unlock switch. Good luck. You do the pass side incase the weather strip gets dammaged you will not have to listen to it on drivers side.

Q: How do you replace a crankshaft position sensor on a 1996 Nissan Quest?

A: If you are mechanically inclined, go buy a Chilton or Haynes manual. If you are not prepared to take off alot of stuff around the pulley end of the engine, then take it in and get it done.

Q: 1996 Nissan Quest with blown head gasket, how much is is worth?
182K miles, needs a new knock sensor to pass smog ($600 mostly in labor) has really muddy oil, low coolant, smoke and liquid out tail pipe. Still starts and runs. Mechanic offered me $900, can I get a better price? Blue book in fair condition is $2940. Good condition: $3400.

A: since the motor is messed up you won't get blue book value. Call local junk yards to see want they'd give you.

Q: where is my crankshaft position sensor located on a 1996 nissan quest?
