Q: 2005 Nissan Xterra. Has been in the shop for two weeks. We couldn't get it out of park. Anybody else??
Anyone else have any problems with the gear shift, automatic, on the Xterra? We couldn't get ours out of Park.
A: 2005 was a bad year for Nissan. Some major quality issues/problems with their vehicles.
However, for your case, it may have simply been a sensor. There's a sensor that determines if the brake is being depressed. If the brake is not being depressed it will not let you change out of park.
It is possible that this sensor has gone bad and that the car does not register that you are steping on the brake.
Q: Why is my Nissan Xterra 05 struggling when I gas it?
I have a used 2005 NIssan Xterra that seems to being running different. I usually press on the gas and move smoothly. I feel as if it is struggling to go.
A: I have a Frontier. The manual that came with my Frontier talks about noticeable difference in performance. The book says that if you notice a difference in performance to change the fuel filter to see if it improves and if it doesn't, I recommend a tune up. Good luck !
Q: 2005 Nissan Xterra Catalytic Convertor has went out.?
I have a 6 cyl, 2005 Nissan Xterra. I took it to nissan and had the diagnostics run on it and they said i needed a new one and quoted me a price of 1000 dollars. Where I live there is no smog law. What should i do? Also i have heard of universal converters and would it be ok to put one of them on? I know 1000 is a total rip off. o2 sensors do not cost alot even if i had to replace them. Please help me.
A: Universals are just fine if you can find a place to weld it in.
1000 for an OEM one is not surprising. They are loaded with platinum as a catalyst inside, and platinum is very very expensive. Even a universal will not be cheep.
You need one for the vehicle to run properly, its not just for pollution control. Your rear O2 sensor is dependent on it and will significantly degrade the performance of the vehicle up to and including sluggishness and stalling.
You also need the O2 sensors for it to run properly, so you cannot remove them either.
EDIT: Your vehicle is only 4 years old. Premature failure of a Catalyst is the sign of other hidden problems. A catalyst should not fail after 4 years. Get a second opinion, I would recommend the Nissan dealer.
Note: Catalytic Convertors have a federal mandated 8 year 80k warranty at the dealer.

I want to purchase a replacement filter and change it myself
A: under the dash around the glove box area
Q: Has anyone gotten a custom sunroof/moonroof installed in their Nissan Xterra 2005-2007 models?
If so, where did you get it done, how much was it, and how do you like it? Also, did you need to remove the cargo basket and/or luggage rack?
A: Mt brother had it done here in Atlanta it never was right and I suggest not doing it because the roof was not made for it and it was about 450 dollars, Its your choice.hope this helps.
Q: I just purchased a used 2005 Nissan Xterra and there is a squeaking in the cargo area.?
My cargo area squeals over the slightest of bumps and even on the highway. Has this happened to anyone? Is there a quick fix? Thanks!
A: check around for something loose in it,usually you,ll find the spare tire isn't tight or something is loose causing this to happen, also make sure the rear doors are shut good on it,anything loose will cause this to happen, good luck with it,and enjoy it,those are good vehicles.
Q: what are the best tires for a 2005 nissan xterra S 4x4??
i currently have BFGs that need to be replaced, and i'm not please with how they've performed. i'm also not trying to spend too much.
A: Here are a couple of quality brands that fit your Xterra's OE size of P265/70R16.
Kumho Road Venture KL78
Toyo Open Country A/T
Both are fine tires that should fit what you are looking for.
Q: I'm buying a used 2005 Nissan xterra that is not equipped with cruise control.?
Is it possible to to add cruise control, and if so what would it cost with instalation?
A: If you can find someone parting a Xterra with cruise control you could purchase the parts from them and since your car is already wired to allow cruise control you can add it with minimal work. Not much more than mounting a few parts, installing relays and the control switches. Still may cost a bundle depending on who you buy from and if you can install it yourself as opposed to apying someone to install it.
Q: Changing the ATF in a 2005 Nissan Xterra?
Is there a drain plug or do I have to unsrew all the bolts from the pan do drain the fluid? If it has a drain plug, where is this located? I couldn't find one this morning.
A: Nissan techs reccomend using a flush machine to get all 12 quarts of ATF changed out. If you get the work done at the dealer they will have national records of the repair and if something bad happens before 6 years and 60 thousand you will be covered. Or with extended warranty you will have records. 22 10 mm bolts hold the pan on and they have speical sealant on the threads and should not be reused.
Q: Changing 2005 Nissan Xterra Rear Differential Fluid?
I have a 2WD Nissan Xterra and want to change the differential fluid. I located the drain plug and the fill plug but is there more to it than simply draning and refilling the gear oil?
A: Just make sure you park on a level surface and fill the diff up till it starts coming out of the fill hole. Be sure to use the correct diff fluid as well. If it's an automatic use 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic and if it's a 6 speed or O/R then use 75W-140 GL-5 synthetic.
Q: Wrench size for rear differential 2005 Nissan Xterra 2WD?
I just need to know what size wrench I need for the rear diff. for a 2005 Nissan Xterra. I need to know the size for the drain plug and fill plug. Thanks all.
A: It's either a 10mm "Allen" head socket or just a 3/8 ratchet without any socket. If it's square then you just use a ratchet but I'm pretty sure it's the 10mm allen socket. I'm not at work right now so I can't give you a def. answer.
Q: I want to change the automatic transmission fluid on a 2005 Nissan Xterra 2WD?
I went to the dealer today to find out where the dipstick for the ATF but there isn't one and they have to check it there at the dealer. They said changing the ATF is tricky and there is a pressure device they use and all. It will cost $80.00 to do it. Any suggestions on doing it at home?
A: Hi my husband works at a dealership. He said 80 dollars is good deal...because the tool to do it costs 70 bucks. He said you are also getting a filter, new gasket, and new fluid (if they do it right). IF you decide to buy the tool, it can be cheap to do it yourself from now on. He also mentioned that your truck should still be under warranty, so it's probably a good idea to go ahead and take it in. That way, if they do it and mess up, they will make good on their work. If you do it and mess up, you could void your warranty and be out a lot more than 80 bucks.
Q: 2005 Nissan Xterra Transmission Fluid Capacity?
I went to the Nissan dealer to find out how many quarts of ATF my 2005 Nissan Xterra takes. It's an automatic. They said 12 quarts which sounds like a lot. Can anyone confirm this? If I drain the fluid will I need 12 quarts to fill it up or is there some left in the tourque converter which includes the 12 quarts?
A: Buy 6 quarts and be perpaired to put in 4 and run the engine and check after ten minutes so the oil runs down the dipstick tube. Most of the time 2005 only take 5 quarts. Yes the torque converter and dry trans takes 12 quarts but you also did not drain the oil cooler.
Q: How much would a 3 Inch lift cost for my 2005 Nissan Xterra?
I've got a 2005 Xterra and I want to put a 3" lift on it. Anyone have a pretty good estimate of how much this would run me?
A: $1,397.85
Q: What is the max speed that I want to take my 4WD to on my 2005 Nissan Xterra?
2005 Xterra SE 4WD I am looking for the 4HI mode.
A: As safe as conditions allow. And any condition requiring 4wd means slow. And you shouldn't even consider how fast you could go. Remember four-wheel drive means conditions where traction is limited and that does not include rain.
